Dr. Yoehan Oh, a member of the Asian Americans and STEM initiative, recently contributed a chapter to Histories of Computing in Asia: IFIP WG 9.7 International Workshop on the History of Computing, HC 2024, Phuket, Thailand, September 8–9, 2024, Revised Selected Papers! His article is titled “Teaching the History of Computing across Asia/America: Computerization, Globalization, and Racialization.”
Based on his experiences at Yale in developing and teaching a course on the trans-Pacific history of computing across Asia, America, and Asian America, Oh’s article argues for a more integrated approach by examining the cross-Pacific, bi-directional flows of people, technologies, machines, and intangible assets such as intellectual properties and capital. His article engages with topics such as computerization and Asian/American racialization, global racialization via technology, a 12-week lesson plan, possible adjustments to different pedagogic needs.
