Global Routes and Hidden Labor in the American Mathematical Society’s Cold War Chinese Mathematics Translation Program

June 1, 2024

We are thrilled to announce that Professors Mary Ting Yi Lui and Theodore Kim have published an original research article titled “Global Routes and Hidden Labor in the American Mathematical Society’s Cold War Chinese Mathematics Translation Program” in Historical Studies in the Natural Sciences!

The articles traces “the first important comprehensive efforts by US mathematicians to survey, translate, and disseminate the work of Chinese mathematicians.” It argues that these efforts “resulted from Cold War geopolitical and scientific competition and economic pressures that emerged in the 1950s and 1960s.” Among the translated works was the famous “Chinese Postman Problem” on transportation routing, having lasting impacts on graph theory, which was authored by Guan Meigu (管梅谷) and originally published in 数学学 报 (Acta Mathematica Sinica) in 1960.

This collaboration across scholars in Asian American history and Computer Science exemplifies the powerful impact of cross-disciplinary collaboration our team is dedciated to. Join us in congratulating Dr. Lui and Dr. Kim! Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to push the boundaries of research, education, and advocacy in Asian Americans and STEM.
